It is reported that on February 7, 2017, seychelles issued a TBT notice G/TBT/N/SYC/3 on two draft regulations through the world trade organization (WTO), one is to prohibit the use of plastic tableware, polystyrene boxes and some plastic bags, and the other is to require the biodegradation mode of such products to meet the specified standards:
(1) regulations on environmental protection (limiting the manufacture, import and distribution of plastic bags) in 2017. Regulations on plastic bags and biodegradable bags.
(2) regulations on environmental protection (restrictions on the import, distribution and sale of plastic tableware and polystyrene boxes) in 2017. Regulations on plastic tableware and polystyrene (PS) boxes and their biodegradable ways.
Both proposals require biodegradable products to meet specified international standards and instruct the standards agency to verify compliance certificates for such products.
The HS codes of the affected products are 392321, 392329, 392410 and 392310. Both bills are expected to take effect in August 2017.
